0) Fundamental principles of adhesive bonding

This section describes terms such as "adhesive", "w‌etting", "a‌dhesion", "c‌ohesion" and "bonded joint" that are of fundamental importance for understanding subsequent sections.

In order for a bonded joint to meet the l‌oad and long-term stability requirements, a variety of things have to be considered during the planning stage and production stage.

The chosen combination of substrates is important for the whole planning process, including the adhesive selection process. There are also other parameters which influence the whole process.

The aim of these guidelines is to make readers aware of the potential of adhesive bonding and also the various factors which have to be heeded. To do this, adhesive bonding technology is viewed from different sides in order to ultimately give readers a full picture.

The information that is given also generally applies for products coated with adhesive such as sticking tape, self-adhesive labels, sealing coatings, etc..
